Underfloor Heating – Double Dip – Octopus Cosy

Daily usage is 30kWh per day during winter.  Whilst the solar panels aren’t as productive during the winter, Toby can charge up his large battery bank using cheaper ‘off-peak’ electricity, and use this during the day.

Octopus Cosy is a tariff designed for specifically for houses with heat pumps and has a “double dip”.  There are two 3 hour periods in each 24hours (4-7am and 1-4pm) within which time the rates are lower. Octopus promise electricity will be 40% cheaper than the Flexible Octopus rate in your area during those times.  However there is a peak rate between 4-7pm which will be 60% above the flexible rate in your area.
The idea being people use those two 3 hour ‘off-peak’ periods to charge their batteries as well as heat the house and use appliances, and in the peak period between 4-7pm you they run the house from the fully charged batteries and consume nothing from the grid.

There are numerous electricity tariffs suited to both solar panel and battery owners, as well as super cheap off-peak rates for those with an EV.
